Kate Hume Glass and Interior Design

Kate Hume has been designing in various media for 20 years - from fashion to film sets and interiors in Europe and the USA.

After studying fashion design in London, Hume became a stylist, designer and trend consultant in London and New York.
She then went on to become an editorial stylist for international fashion publications and advertising campaigns in the U.S.
Returning to Europe again, and settling in Amsterdam she set up her own design company in 1998.

An enduring interest in glass as a medium led to the design and production of a small collection of 'unica' vases - sensual, tactile pieces.
Her first collection, which comprised organic, free flowing shapes in jewel bright colours, was launched at 100% Design in London in 1999 and instigated a huge trend for organic forms in glass.

Hume's work was then featured as part of the Contemporary Decorative Arts show at Sothebys, London, in 2000.
Since then she has developed a growing international clientele - both in the design and art worlds, and has had exhibitions in Milan, London, Cologne, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Kuwait, New York, Paris and Lisbon.
Her work has been selected for the International Design Yearbook 2003 and 2005, and is currently working on an exclusive collection for Italian design company Giorgetti.

Since 1998 Kate and her husband Frans van der Heyden have been collaborating on their furniture design company, Birdman Furniture - a chic, simple and innovative collection that now sells world-wide.

Inevitably this led to her creating entire interiors for her clients and launching another division of the company - Kate Hume Design.
A passion for combining rare and unusual objects, photography and art with elements from Birdman Furniture and Kate Hume Glass give each project a strong individual identity and depth.
